to have a tattoo or not…

Just last month I got a word from a dear friend-slash-business partner, Roni, that she’s going to have a tattoo. She showed me the image she would like to be tattooed on her left arm. I’ve guessed it would complement her being a treehugger. Then a week later, I saw her with the tattoo already on her arm. It just had some sort of revision, like the tree’s spirals were made heart-shaped, and a doll was hanged on the arms hugging the tree trunk. Also, she told me that it actually has a story in it (I will be hearing that story from her maybe tomorrow). It looked nice on her fair complexion.

I’ve always liked to have one, too. I just can’t decide on what image to permanently print on my skin. Just like Roni, I wanted something that would tell something about me, like people who are going to see it will have a clear impression on what kind of person I am or what my preferences are. But then, the reason I can’t pursue having a tattoo boils down to one point: I can’t possibly print something on me permanently because I know my preferences will eventually change as I age. Heck, I have to get used to wrestling with my own demons for as long as I live.

I guess I can’t have this tattoo I’ve been longing to have on my skin for quite sometime:

Stop whining about 500 Days of Summer, will you?

I actually didn’t like to make a movie review as my first post here but then I had felt this urgency to back up the movie 500 Days of Summer with some kind words it deserves. For the past few weeks after its screening here in the Philippines, people are so cruel to comment on some social sites (all right, you read my mind, it’s Facebook) that the movie sucks — big time. That it bored them to hell. That it’s average. I don’t have any problem with that, we are all free to express our opinions may it please the majority or not. The thing is, the movie is not a sore loser at the box office. It averaged more than $31,000 from just 27 screens in its opening according to The New York Observer.

Let me point out some things that make it not suck — big time.

1.It’s not a boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl-then-a-wedding film.

You probably lost faith in Staircase Spiral’s I Love You More Today than Yesterday when you were dumped. Most romantic comedy films do not admit that (yes, the losing faith on love thing) because sales depend on love conquers all theme. 500 days of Summer did a confident job on the breaking the norm.

2.Too honest that it’s painful yet not too dark.

Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) goes through a major dumping by Summer Finn (Zooey Deschannel). Who would think something that seemed to be perfectly fitted would break up? Also, some love affairs are like that, not into putting “labels” on their relationship. That sucks, right? But it happens. I know even girls who watched it felt Tom’s pain and wanted to kick Summer’s ass. But it didn’t lack the great sense of joy about the good times, just as the film tries not to lie about the dark hours.

3.Great casting.

We saw Gordon-Levitt into challenging roles in dark dramas Brick, The Lookout, and Mysterious Skin. In 500 days of Summer, his romantic-lead credentials was brandished. Oh, by the way, I thought he doesn’t have a talent in singing and dancing. Also, whenever he consults his younger sister about his love affair, he looks totally virgin on matters of relationship.

On the heartbreaker’s part, Deschannel was perfect. She was very far from that of her contemporaries: sports a 60′s haircut and natural make-up makes her look very old fashioned. Her being poised, dreamy (or more like distracted) came out so natural. Her beauty will never make you think she’s had any mean thoughts. She’s too lovely that you’ll feel Tom’s pain that you would want to kick her ass yet you can’t blame her.

4. A film that is anti-romance.

What the hell?! Thought this is a romantic comedy… Good thing we were spared of the knicks-knacks of mobile phones and/or cheesy remarks.

5.A confident debut.

I think Marc Webb did his best not to make a typical romantic movie. The camera shots, the places where he films it and the way he put it together are unconventional, loaded with split screens and animated afterthoughts.

The way it attacked the rules of romantic comedy is what I like best. Ideas were their main dialogue, the kind of stuff real people talk about. Its frame breaks time, moving back and forth as Tom thinks through the highs and lows of the 500 days he has known Summer. I like the complicated narrative of it where the end is at the beginning, gave me a hint that no wedding is going to happen.
